Library of Congress/Smithsonian

Thursday, March 7 and Friday, March 8

ABA members will receive a guided tour of selected items from the Music Division of the Library of Congress, led by ABA member Loras Schissel. (The tour will be offered in timed shifts, so please keep track of the time slot to which you are assigned!) Coaches will drop members off at the East end of the National Mall, and while you are not taking Loras’s tour, you are free to tour the rest of the historic Jefferson Building, nearby Botanic Gardens, National Gallery of Art, and American Indian Museum, all of which are close to the drop-off point at the East end of the mall.

For those who would like to venture further down the mall, you are welcome to take advantage of the Circulator Bus system ($1 per ride – no change provided!), which runs on a ten-minute circuit of the mall. Please note that the African American Museum and Air and Space Museum both require a timed-entry pass, so will likely not be practical options for this excursion. Buses will depart the hotel at 12 p.m., arrive at the mall by 12:30 p.m., depart the mall at 3:40 p.m., and return no later than 4 p.m. Box lunch and transportation included.

Because space is limited in the Air and Space Museum located on the National Mall, the Udvar-Hazy Center opened in 2003 as an annex to showcase larger aviation and space artifacts, including the Space Shuttle Discovery, a Blackbird SR-71, and a Concorde.

It features two massive hangars with multi-level walkways from which to view this unique collection.

Buses will depart the hotel at 12 p.m., arrive at Udvar-Hazy by 12:45 p.m., depart the museum at 3:15 p.m., and return to the hotel no later than 4 p.m. Box lunch and transportation are included.

Golf Outing - Laurel Hill Golf Club

Thursday, March 7

Visit one of the nicest public courses in Northern Virginia for 18 holes of golf. Group transportation won't be provided, so you'll need to indicate if you need a ride. Locals who plan to golf will help provide rides; Uber or Lyft are also options. Departure from the hotel is no later than 12 p.m. and a box lunch will be provided at the golf course. The course is a 35-minute drive and golf will commence as soon as possible after arrival.

Given that 18 holes of golf can average about 4.5 hours on this course, individual groups may decide to terminate early. Otherwise, golfers may return to the hotel at their leisure or drive directly to the evening’s concerts. Box lunch, green fees and cart are included in the excursion cost of $85. Should you need to rent clubs, please make your own arrangements by calling the pro shop at 703-493-8849.

One of the original settlements of Alexandria, Virginia, Old Town is situated in the southeastern portion of the city, along the Potomac River. Much of the original architecture has been preserved and protected as National Historic Landmarks, and the pedestrian-friendly area is replete with many restaurants and shops. In the middle of these colonial-era landmarks is the Torpedo Factory Art Center, a former U.S. Naval munitions factory converted into an art center in 1974. It is home to the largest number of publicly accessible working artist studios in the United States.

Buses will depart the hotel at 12 p.m. and arrive in Old Town by 12:20 p.m. Buses will depart Old Town at 3:30 p.m and return to the hotel no later than 4 p.m. Transportation is provided, but lunch is on your own.

The Virginia Grand Military Band

Saturday, March 9 at 2:45 p.m.

ABA member Loras Schissel invites members of the ABA to attend one of his regular concerts with The Virginia Grand Military Band (VGMB), which just happens to be taking place at Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall on Saturday afternoon.

While this is not an official ABA event, the VGMB has graciously agreed to provide free admission and a coach to transport interested ABA members and guests.

The bus will depart the hotel at 2 p.m. and return at 5:30 p.m. No reservations required, but coach seating is limited to 55, so first come, first served. Once you're at the concert venue, just show your ABA badge for free admission. If you forget your badge, go to the Will Call window and let them know you're in the ABA.
